TRY, TRY AGAIN
Music and Lyrics by HARRY LEWIS
My Mama said, “If first you don’t succeed
It won’t do no darn good wishin’ how you’d like it to be.
‘Cause life don’t come with fancy guarantees,
It all depends on your philosophy.
No use waitin’ for somethin’ good to begin,
If you’re smart you’ll stop and look and listen
And remember
TRY, TRY AGAIN.”
My mama said, “TRY, TRY AGAIN.
When things go wrong
You must be strong
And be your own best friend
And try it again.”
I used t’ think that luck is what it takes
And the ones that made it got the lucky breaks.
But now I see it in a diff’rent way:
I know the luck I have is the luck that I made.
And disappointments are jus’ part of the plan
Showin’ me what else I need to understand, so I tell myself,
“TRY, TRY AGAIN,”
I tell myself, “TRY, TRY AGAIN.
When things go wrong
You must be strong
And be your own best friend
And try it again.”
Let me tell a little story of a lump of coal
Who wouldn’t stop at nothin’ ’til he reached his goal.
And ev’rybody laughed ’n said, “Hey lump, relax,
You’ll always be a lump o’ coal, so face the facts!”
But did that little lump give up? Oh no, he knew
That there was somethin’ special that he had to do.
And though it took what seemed like an eternity,
That lump became a di’mond for the world to see!
And he sparkled,
And he glistened,
And he said,
“Though you may travel roads that twist an’ bend,
Hold on tight to your dream, ’cause that’s what counts in the end!
And think of me, a little lump of coal,
Who saw the di’mond way down deep within his soul,
And try it again. Always tell yourself:
‘TRY, TRY AGAIN.
Ya’ gotta TRY, TRY AGAIN.
When things go wrong
You must be strong
And be your own best friend.
TRY, TRY AGAIN.
Ya’ gotta TRY, TRY AGAIN.
When things go wrong
You must be strong
And be your own best friend
And try it again.’”
