STONE BY STONE
Music and lyrics by HARRY LEWIS
Once upon a time there was a wall.
It grew within the hearts of one and all.
No one really noticed but a few
Who warned about the harm the wall would do.
Only they could see how strong the wall had grown
Within each heart, day by day, STONE BY STONE.
A bell began to ring one fateful day,
And many swore they heard an angel say,
“When you save one life, you save them all;
Love is stronger, stronger than the wall.”
Lightning flashed, a mighty trumpet blast was blown,
And the wall began to quake, STONE BY STONE!
The trumpet called for all to hear: “Break the wall within your heart!
Lend a hand and do your part,
And in the end it will be shown
You made a diff’rence day by day, STONE BY STONE.”
And then the wind began to blow and blow,
Repeating words forgotten long ago:
“Anything you do, however small,
Takes another stone down from the wall.”
Many say the wind blew stronger, day by day, until throughout the barren land the seeds were sown;
An’ generations would recall
How there once had been a wall,
But it crumbled, after all, STONE BY STONE.
Day by day, year by year, someone reaches out to you;
Is there something you can do
To let them know they’re not alone?
Miracles don’t happen on their own.
They happen day by day and one by one and stone by STONE BY STONE.
