A PLACE WHERE I BELONG (ORIGINAL VERSION)
Music and Lyrics by HARRY LEWIS
When trembling I requested the Lord my life to bless,
Right then, in but a whisper, I heard the answer, “Yes!”
And so began a journey and this became the song
That led me to a place where I belong—
A place of celebration where arms are open wide
And love without conditions fills me with a pride
To help me face the future courageously and strong
Because I have a place where I belong.
I knew there would be trials and there would be a cost
To openly embrace the truth and find the faith I lost.
My will became like iron and like a lightning rod,
When I forgave with all my heart, then I was touched by God!
And now my life is better; my gratitude, immense.
I’ve gained a precious wisdom— at last, it all makes sense.
I see that being diff’rent doesn’t make me wrong
And I deserve a place where I belong.
No longer am I searching so empty and alone
For here is where my cup is full, this place I call my own.
It’s here I learned the secret I chose to understand:
That when I say, “I’m what I am,” I reach the Promised Land!
How often I remember my silent first request—
The feeling of surrender the moment I heard, “Yes!”
That’s when I broke my silence with praise and with a song.
And then I found my Soul.
And then I found my Self.
And then I found a place where I belong.
I’m here where I belong.

A PLACE WHERE I BELONG (REVISED VERSION)
Music and Lyrics by HARRY LEWIS
When I was lost and lonely, afraid and so unsure,
I saw there, in the distance, a single open door;
And so began a journey and this became the song
That led me to a place where I belong—
A place of celebration where arms are open wide
And love without conditions fills me with a pride
To help me face the future courageously and strong
Because I have a place where I belong.
I knew there would be trials and there would be a cost
To openly embrace the truth and find the life I lost.
My will became like iron and slowly I would see
When I forgave with all my heart, the past would set me free!
And now my life is better, my gratitude, immense.
I’ve gained a precious wisdom, at last it all makes sense;
I see that being diff’rent doesn’t make me wrong
And I deserve a place where I belong.
No longer am I searching, unhappy and alone,
For here is where my fam’ly is—the friends I call my own.
From them I learned the secret I cherish more and more:
Each time I say, “I’m what I am,” I open up a door!
How often I remember arriving at this place—
The feeling of elation, the tears upon my face;
That’s when I broke my silence and this became my song,
And then I found real Love.
And then I found true Peace.
And then I found a Place where I belong.
I’m here where I belong.
