Is there any feeling worse than being a wallflower at a dance? I can’t tell you how many times, as a high school teenager, I’d find myself immobilizedpinnedto the wall of the gymnasium, too fearful of rejection to move.
For some reason, in 1984, while waiting for a bus (!), the idea of writing a song about this universal, awful experienced, popped into my head. Since then, this song has become one of my most requested numbers…and one I really enjoy performing. Singers like performing it, too. It’s got everything: Catchy melody. Fun words. Drama. Humor. And a nice turn-of-phrase at the end.
Although originally written to be sung by a guy, I wondered what it would sound like if a woman sang it. Of course, I had to rewrite a few lyrics, but Canadian country singing sensation, Cindy Church really makes this song work with Paul Novotny on bass and Joe Sealy on piano.
