SONGS : ABOUT : Stone By Stone

Peace on earth, good will toward men.

Nice thought.  But why should it be reserved for Christmas?

Isn’t it be something we should strive for throughout the year… after the presents have been opened (and, ironically, the inevitable family fights have occurred)?

There have been hundreds, perhaps thousands, of songs written about peace, but how many offer a practical, achievable way to make it happen?

These were the questions I grappled with while writing STONE BY STONE, a song I began writing in 1993 and didn’t consider completed until 2003, after a ridiculous number of revisions and rewrites.

The breakthrough came when I learned that all the great religions have the same formula for achieving harmony and peace.  Sure, they may express it differently, but they all amount to exactly the same thing.

After all, the truth is the truth.

Of course, once I stumbled on this revelation, I still had to figure out how to translate it into music and verses…that rhymed!

Oh yes, there were many times when I would throw up my hands and want to give up.  But, over the years, I’d come back again and again, hoping that this time I got it.  (I even recorded a version that has since been almost entirely rewritten.)

Is this version the final one?  I think so.  Then again, I’m always open to you, the listener’s, input.  I want this song to make a difference.  Do you think it’s got what it takes to motivate people to do what many think is impossible—actually achieve world peace?

Miracles don't happen on their own, they happen day by day and year by year and stone by stone by stone
